Living in Retirement - Anna
Living in Retirement - Anna
  • Age 72, widow
  • Lived in same house for 30 years
  • Hears about an estate problem
  • Realizes she might have the same problem

Anna's son, Scott had just talked with their lawyer, and was shocked by how much his wife, Ellen, owed in taxes on her parents' estate. "Remember that summer house on the beach?" said Scott. "We may have to sell it." "No!" said Anna. "That house is a jewel – and it's been in Ellen's family forever." Scott explained that the house was now worth $1,000,000. "So to pay the inheritance taxes, you may have to sell the house," said Anna. "Exactly," said Scott. As they talked, Anna realized she was in exactly the same position: all of her assets were in her name, and she had no protection against estate taxes – or her own disability. She needed a financial planner as much as Scott and Ellen did!
